CHEMICAL OXIDATION 1
OVERVIEW OF TECHNOLOGIES
Innovative treatment technologies for the remediation of groundwater and soil such as in situ chemical oxidation are becoming more widely accepted. This remediation strategy involves injecting oxidants directly into the source zone and down-gradient plume. The oxidant chemicals react with the contaminant, producing innocuous substances such as carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and inorganic chloride.
Media contaminated with chlorinated solvents such as perchloroethylene (PCE), trichloroethylene (TCE), vinyl chloride (VC), and many other organic contaminants including methyl-tert-butyl-ether (MTBE), polyaromatic hydrocarbon compounds (PAH), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) and others are effectively remediated in situ with the aid of oxidizing agents.
The oxidant chemicals that are commonly considered for use in the in situ destruction of organic contaminants include permanganate, hydrogen peroxide, the hydroxyl radical (OH-) (as generated with Fenton's Reagent) and ozone. These oxidants have been able to cause the rapid and complete chemical destruction of many toxic organic chemicals; other organics are amenable to partial degradation as an aid to subsequent bioremediation.
This section will provide a brief overview of the common technologies used in in situ chemical oxidation on contaminated sites.
